A Screen Is a Strange Window
Demonstration reflections on using technology deliberately when most tools are designed to become environments.

A good tool disappears into the work. A screen is less modest. It contains the tool, the instructions, several distractions and a persuasive argument that another tab might solve everything.
The answer is probably not to reject technology. That would be inconvenient and, in my case, professionally confusing. The more interesting experiment is to decide when it is a tool and when it has quietly become the room.
Deliberate living is mostly the unglamorous work of noticing what has become automatic.
