Notes on Carrying a Camera

Carrying a camera changes the shape of a walk. It adds a low, persistent question to everything in front of you: is this something, or are you merely pleased to be outside?
The useful answer is often neither. A photograph can begin as an excuse to look properly. It can also become an impressive mechanism for avoiding the place itself.
The camera is good at insisting that attention has a subject. Life is usually less organised.
For now, this article demonstrates the intended rhythm:
- concise paragraphs;
- room around images;
- occasional notes that earn their emphasis; and
- no demand that every walk becomes content.
A practical note
The journal should favour observations over verdicts. Cameras may appear frequently, but the catalogue number need not be the point.
